Aims and Scope:

The 21st Century is arguably the age of biosciences, and since humans are fully dependent on the Earth’s ecosystems, central to this research is how human actions may affect our planet and consequently human well-being. Meiofauna research has significantly matured during the last few decades, addressing a range of fundamental and applied questions related to climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem function and services.

We therefore see a strong momentum for assembling a special issue on the past, present, and future of meiofauna research to coincide with the triennial meeting of the International Association of Meiobenthologists, which will be held in Heraklion, Crete, between 3-8 July 2016.

We envision that this special issue may become a widely referenced document, not only among meiobenthologists but also among ecologists, environmentalists, politicians, and other stakeholders.

Description and procedures:

The special issue will include as an introduction four review papers, which will be presented as keynote talks during the conference.

Along with these four review papers, the special issue will also include original research articles, other reviews, short communications, as well as position and opinion papers devoted to the study of marine environments, ranging from the deep sea to the upper limits of the tidal zone. Since JEMBE is a marine journal, submissions limited to terrestrial and freshwater research as well as studies that are purely taxonomic, will NOT be considered for this special issue.

Participants of the IsIMCo will be invited to submit manuscripts under the four main topics of the conference, but submissions will not be limited to work presented at the meeting.

Please note that all contributions to the special issue will be fully refereed according to the usual standards of the journal and must meet the journal’s general criteria for quality and scope of work. Acceptance of an abstract for presentation at the conference does not guarantee acceptance for publication. All submissions will be processed by the guest editors, but the final decision will lie with the JEMBE editor.

Timeline of the special issue:

  • August 31, 2016: Deadline for submission of title, list of authors, and short description of the paper

  • November 30, 2016: Complete manuscript submission deadline; authors are encouraged to submit before this date

  • ~ November – December 2017: Tentative date for the publication of the Special Issue both for on-line appearance and in print.
